Although We Have No Obligation, To Stay Alive...

It was a foreboding wind that raced across the arctic plain, a wind that spoke of tradgedies from past times, and new ones yet to be realised. The encroaching darkness that seemed to penetrate even the snow covered ice fields in of the pole brought with it a sense of evil that could be felt by anyone and anything, but only fought by the gifted few. It was a gift then, that these gifted ones were trying with all their might to overthrow the theif who stole the thrown, and sought to steal life itself from the very world. Or perhaps he didn't, but he certainly did nothing towards stopping the mindless death of virtually an entire world. But despite the fact that he seemed to hold all the cards, there was one wildcard left in this world. The Jinchuu resistance.

Led by the dethroned Shinigami Prince, and marshalled the 6 powerful Commanders, each far beyond what was once called the pinnacle of human and shinigami power, there was still hope in the hearts of those left. There was still hope on the horizon. There was still hope in the form of Susumu Katsuro, Commander of Jinchuu. A peerless warrior, yet somewhat of a pacifist, he was unique even amongst the varied and uniquely attributed Jinchuu. His tall form ran through a series of simple warm ups as he readied himself for a training session he had not taken part in for some time; Twin Swords.

Whilst only one was his zanpaukto, the other had been forged using the knowledge of his constant partner through the years, Nikkou. Yet another nodachi blade, it mirrored the weapon within which Nikkou resided in virtually every physical aspect. Even an Arrancar's Cero would struggle to shatter this blade, but it still would not be enough to penetrate Reyes Fernandes' hierro. On its own at least.

Commander Katsuro's loss at the hands of the Primera had left him nursing a bruised and battered ego. Whilst not a particularly prideful man, he held great stock in his own abilities with a blade, and barely scratching his opponent even with his shikai released had him doubting himself despite his obvious strengths. Slashing the unnamed blade through the air, Katsuro smiled softly as he felt the tip bury itself in the snow at his feet. Perfectly balanced, thanks Kou-kun Removing it from the ground and sliding it slowly back into its sheathe upon his back, he left his hand gripping the tsuba as he felt a reiatsu signature nearby. Whoever it was, they were heading towards his own un-hidden reiatsu, and they were unlikely to be friendly in nature. Regardless of who they were, Katsuro would defend himself to the best of his not inconsiderable abilities.

And he would triumph in the end, just as Jinchuu would.

On Broken Backs We Beg For Mercy, We Will Survive.

Death comes to all things, even to a god!

So much had to be done, and yet there was so little time to do. Although Mortifero had his own goals that he wished to achieve, he still had to do things that would keep the other Espada off his back. This was so very unfortunate, for it made it that much more difficult for him to do anything. In Hueco Mundo, he gets attacked. In the Living World, he gets attack. He would probably get attacked if he tried to visit El Sol too. Oh well, nothing that could be about it, even if it was a huge pain.

The sky bulged and slowly begun tearing up as the Arrancar's Garganta opened for him. His reiatsu instantly began pouring into the area, causing raven feathers to fall from seemingly nowhere. Mortifero could care less about being exposed. He was, after all looking for one man, who, according to Mortifero's information, was the only one in this area. If this was true, it would make it easy to find him. Stepping from the raging energy that made up the inside of the Garganta, Mortifero cast about his gaze. To his joy, he had opened up not far from his target.

Holding his hat on his head, to keep it from being blown away by the cold winds, Mortifero smiled to himself. He began his slow descent to the ground below. "SHINIGAMI-SAN!" Mortifero called out, waving his free hand in the air. He could only imagine what the man's reaction would be to this little surprise. The reasoning for Mortifero targeting this specific Shinigami was due to the news of his lose to the Primera in El Sol. Mortifero found this fascinating.

Though he was rather mannered Arrancar, and like his two superior Espada back in Las Noches, disliking unnecessary violence, his curiosity of the Shinigami had overcome him. With this in mind, Mortifero began running across the cold plain as soon as his feet touched the ground. His coat and hair whipped about as he moved, with his usual causal grin and bright gold eyes. Everything about him screamed human or Shinigami, but the texture of his reiatsu was just not right, even if it was somewhat different from other Arrancar. This was going to be and interesting day.

Death comes for all things, but why doesn't it come for me?

Even against the cold wind and endless snow of the arctic, Susumu Katsuro stood firm and unmoving as he locked his eyes upon the gaping whole in the fabric of reality. Admittedly, the reiatsu that was seeping through before its creator was of an interesting make up and would probably leave the Commander at a loss for whatever being stepped through, but Garganta was a hollow technique. This left no doubt in the mind of Katsuro as to what kind of creature it was that stepped through. An Arrancar.

Still with his broad grin plastered across his stubbled features, he wheeled completely to face the being coming in his direction. An interesting creature there was no doubt, the hat was certainly a nice touch, not to mention the feathers that appeared to be composed completely of reiatsu scattered around his being. Hmm, sometimes wish my reiatsu would be interesting like that. Upon hearing the creatures call, it became clear that it had come specifically to look for him. After all, in this barren landscape, the chances of appearing so close to virtually the only soul around were nigh on impossible at best. With a deep bow, he showed his complete lack of fear to the cloaked creature by showing his back. After all, Katsuro was one of the most powerful beings in existence, even Aizen-dono himself would have to expend a small amount of effort in wiping him from reality.

"Good day to you Arrancar-kun! To what do I owe this unexpected pleasure?"

Twirling his zanpaukto around in his right hand, he completed a series of complex motions in the crisp arctic air. Despite how stupid they would have looked to any kind of competent opponent, they had a purpose beyond their idiocy. They served to loosen up the shoulder muscles that quickly became tight in the below freezing conditions, though admittedly Katsuro could warm up the entire area in an instant by releasing into Shikai. Such were the perks of a Sol based zanpaukto, both light and heat were his to command in different ways. So close to his zanpaukto was he that even his own reiatsu was tinged with the flames and power of the sun itself. Also, it was a really pretty colour. After all, what's the point in fighting to save reality as a whole if you're not gonna enjoy the simple things like pretty colours?

"Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
`Sir,' said I, `or Madam, truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,
That I scarce was sure I heard you' - here I opened wide the door; -
Darkness there, and nothing more."
The Arrancar couldn't help but quote the long dead human poet at a time like this.

As Mortifero grew closer, he could see that the Shinigami held two blades. It was kinda difficult to tell, but only one was an actual zanpakuto. The other, though, seemed to be infused with reiatsu. It was a very interesting trick, something the Arrancar decided to tuck into the back of his mind to try later once he was finish here. He began to slow and eventually stopped, just as the man bowed to him, in greeting and spoke. Grinning, he gave his hat one last smack, forcing it further down onto his head to ensure that it remained in place, despite of the wind, before he responded to the Shinigami's question.

"I merely thought I would come and see the one that fought Primera Reyes myself. I must say that from what I heard, it was quite the show," Mortifero said, rather calmly. To him, this was no more the a friendly exchange between two beings. He personally had nothing against his natural enemy. In fact, he supported what they were doing, even if he kept this to himself. Balance and order had to be restored to the cycle once more, but Aizen stood in the way. "Though, I do have an alterer motive," he added, just as casually, "I wish to battle you in order to more accurately gauge my own power. I'm afraid that I may not be strong enough to move forth with my plans, which could benefit you as much as myself."

His little hints were not obvious, nor did his statement leave anything that may lead to his true desire. It was his way of letting the man before him know that this Arrancar did not wish to be his enemy. However, it didn't matter, for since they were both polar opposite in power, they would always be enemies, no matter how much Mortifero wished. The sides of black and white could never mingle, they would forever circle one another.
Yin and Yang until the end of time.

It was amazing what the wind of the earth could carry along with its powerful, and occasionally destructive, gusts. The soft verse said aloud by this strange Arrancar were carried to the ears of Katsuro as if by some kind of magic. Not that it would surprise him in this day and age of course, nothing did anymore. Well...That was a lie. But it wasn't what was considered surprising in times long past. Now it was acts of random kindness, self-sacrifice and heroism that gave him surprise and awe. It also made him proud. Proud to be on what could only be considered universally as the "good" side. Not that there was really a good side in this conflict, there never was in any kind of war. Death was death, for whatever the reasons. Seems kinda pointless to hope that we can all just get along he thought to himself, feeling the solid presence of Nikkou in the back of his mind agree without even a word passing between the two.

What did surprise the dishevelled former Taichou, was what verse in particular the Arrancar was speaking in his presence. Not that Arrancar were generally stupid creatures, perhaps uneducated for the most part; but they were generally fiendishly clever as was the way with the most dangerous of predators. But for an Arrancar to be quoting Edgar Allen Poe was something even the virtually timeless Commander had never experienced. With a wry grin he eyed the capped adversary before him;

"Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before; But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,
And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, "Lenore!"
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word "Lenore!"
Merely this and nothing more.

"Not often I share words with such a pleasant Arrancar. Hell, I don't think many of my comrades back in Jinchuu have even heard of Edgar Allen Poe. I'm impressed. But if it's a test of power you want, I'm always ready my friend. But...Pleasantries first, some things come before combat. Susumu Katsuro, Commander of Jinchuu and Eternally Single, to whom do I have the pleasure of addressing?"

Certainly if any of his more stalwart comrades heard him bandying words with a foe in such a fashion, they would question his alliegances to the cause. But Katsuro was behind the goal of Jinchuu with his entire being and something inside told him he would give his life for it someday, but ever the pacifist he sought to forstay the inevitable clashing of blades, ideals and reiatsu with merry words and candour. At his very core, Katsuro was tired of the endless fighting between the two races of Hollow and Shinigami, but knew full well it would continue as it must for the sake of those humans still left in this world and the souls prisoner in the next.

{OOC: Sorry about the lateness of my post. My computer is having some real serious issues right now so I can only get on at my cousin's house.}

This was purely amazing to the Arrancar. This Shinigami actual knew of Poe. No one he had ever encountered had ever understood what he was speaking of when he quoted verses from the poem, "Raven." It was truly a surprise and this particular man seemed to be someone he would simply love to chat with over a nice bottle of hot sake, but such luxuries were not ones Mortifero could have. He let out a sigh at the mere thought of what Garnet and Sarah would do to him if they knew he was having such ideas. This is so unfair! Why couldn't have been a Shinigami, then at least I would not be hated for being so... Human.

"Ah, I apologize for not already introducing myself. I am Mortifero Abismo, Tercera Espada of Las Noches. Self-proclaimed Raven King, but not in the sense of being the king of all beings, but in the sense of being the king of ravens." He bowed deeply as he spoke, sweeping his head from his head, letting his dark wavy hair blow in the wind. The fact that he took his eyes from the man before him should that he was fearless, confident, or just stupid. It was actually the fact the Mortifero believed that his man would not resort to such dirty hits. This being send, there was always that small amount of doubt that tugged at the back of his made, keeping him on his toes, but not that one would notice unless they looked carefully. As he came up from his bow, placing his hat back onto his head, the Arrancar spoke once more. "Let me demonstrate what I mean."

Mortifero proceeded to raise his right arm up to the side, until it was perfectly parallel to the ground. A shriek from the sky was the only notice before a black blur shot from the clouds. Flipping in the air to help slow down, Mortifero's trusty Hollow Raven companion lands upon his outstretched arm. "You have to promise that you wont tell anyone about this. You will be the first to live who has seen it." The Arracnar spoke in all seriousness. No one, not even another Arrancar had witnessed what he was about to show Katsuro, but he felt that this man was truly worthy of seeing such a thing.

Arrancar were such a varied and amusing bunch of creatures. It was far too simple to lump them all in together in the same group of mindless destroyers as the Hollow they evolved from. They varied in ways that made them all but indestinguishable from the humans and shinigami they preyed upon, it was only the rage that tended to lay just below the surface of their iron skin that seperated them from simply being allies to the Jinchuu cause. Even they couldn't find living at the whims of Aizen an enjoyable existence, and the smarter of them knew it was against the balance of all things with the world firmly under their control. The Human Realm should be just that, for humans. It should never have become the feeding ground for things long dead, but it had thanks to the stupidity of a mans ambition. Even the pacifist in Katsuro wanted to stab Aizen Sosuke in the face. Hard.

Still, it seemed the Arrancar before him now wanted to simply test his power. That was alright, it might get a bit more heated than the spars he was used to, but what was life without a bit of excitement? With the fact that the hat wearing son of a gun before him was the Tercera of Las Noches, not to mention royalty, Katsuro let his left hand move up to the hilt above his right shoulder and draw the blade slowly from the sheath across his back. Whilst not his zanpauktou, it served its purpose well in the hands of Katsuro. After all, any blade could be used to deadly effect if one merely knew how to use it, and if there was one thing Katsuro was a proclaimed master of, it was stabbing things with big shiny bits of metal.

Hearing Mortifero's words and then watching as he seemed to call a small bird-like hollow from the sky, Katsuro's smile softly dimmed across his face. It was still there of course, but this was his more serious face. It wouldn't do to be grinning like a complete idiot all the time after all.

"You have my word Raven King, I will not reveal any of which comes to light during our combat here. I trust I can hold you to the same?"

Since it seemed that the Espada had no plans on the demise of Katsuro, it only seemed appropriate that the stubbled Commander ask his word to keep what he saw secret from his colleagues. After all, it wouldn't do to go into a future combat against opponents who knew everything regarding his fighting style and his abilities. He'd still win of course, but seriously, does Katsuro seem like he enjoys effort to you?

Settling himself into a low stance side on towards his opponent, Katsuro allowed the grin to grow once more across his face. With both his blades in hand, he knew that whatever the Arrancar threw in his direction, he would be hard pushed to get through the weave of death that he was able to create with these implements of destruction. Still, whatever it was, Susumu Katsuro of Jinchuu was ready.

This was very fascinating. This Shinigami, wasn't being suspicious or even drawing back from him, in fact, he looked like he was looking forward to the battle. This little fact helped put the Arrancar's heart at ease. Releasing the power that was his Zanpakuto tend to take a toll on his mind. It's reiatsu was almost too much for him to control, and as far as he was aware, he was the only Arrancar that actually feared his own sword. This whole thing wasn't just to test his strength, it was to see if he could still effectively wield it without being driven back into the insanity that had controlled him as a Hollow.

Slowly, a dark blue shine began to outline Mortifero's body as his level of reiatsu began to steadily rise. "You have my word, Kasturo-kun," He said as three small Garganta's opened up behind him. Almost as soon as they were open a great black tendril shoot forth from each of them, spiraling past Mortifero and then past Kasturo, a great wind seemed to be blasting off of them. As they cleared the Shinigami, the tendrils dispersed into hundreds of ravens. Just as quick as the dispersion, they surrounded the two fighters in a blotchy dome, cutting off the wind, and most of the outside world.

It might have been just Mortifero's imagination, but each of the deadly birds felt like an oppressed feeling of murderous intent. Each of the ravens, held a small piece of Mortifero's power, and that scared him greatly. He had shattered his Zanpakuto almost the instant he had become an Arrancar. The pieces had turned into these raven's. At first there had only been a dozen or so, but as he had gotten stronger, the flock and grown and grown. By the time Aizen had found him, the birds looked like a cloud that huge sky above Mortifero.

Letting his arm fall, Mortifero stared up at the dome of birds, his smile gone, his eyes no longer shined. His fear of this power that surrounded them, did not show on his face, but it was still there. "Tell me Shinigami. Do you fear
your own power?"
He tore his eyes from the birds and looked down at Kasturo, as small smile forming on his face, a broken smile. " 'Cause I do!"

When you live a life as long as those of Arrancar and Shinigami tended towards, it often got to the point where you stop being surprised by what life throws at you. Not that they're actually alive, but still, the point remains. Even when you've not seen everything, after being around for multiple centuries, or perhaps even millenia, then you've probably seen something similar. But this dome of flapping darkness that surrounded the two combatants now...This was something Katsuro had not seen the likes of in all his years, of which there were a multitude.

Resting his zanpauktou against his right shoulder, the Shinigami let out a low whistle as he looked on with awe at his changing surroundings. It wasn't just that Mortifero could summon a flock of birds to do his bidding, he was an Espada after all, for the most part the lower-tier Hollow creatures did what they were told by the Espada. It was the fact that each of these miniscule monstrosities held the same reiatsu signature as the Tercera himself. Which brought connotations to the mind of the former Royal Guard that he would have rathered stayed away.

"My, my, my...And here I am without any feed for these lil' tykes."

Even in the face of as imposing a site as this, Susumu Katsuro still made jokes and then had the indecency to laugh at them softly. It was just his way of dealing with things, and it was as effective in masking how he truely felt as any of the stoic faced shenanigans Kensai and Ammiel put on when wanting to hide something. To Mortifero, there would be no real change, but in his mind, Katsuro was thinking just how powerful this Raven King must be and that particular thought caused the smile upon his face to change for the first time since the Arrancar had appeared.

Of course, all it did was grow wider. After all, logically, he shouldn't be as powerful as Reyes Fernandes, and Katsuro had stood up to that miserable faced git just fine. Sure he had come away with a small injury, but that was the life he lead. Going into battle, and then complaining about the fact you got injured is nothing but stupidity. The fact that this Arrancar had such a physical representation of the vast power at his command allowed Katsuro one joyous thought.

There was no need to hold back in the slightest.

Sheathing the Nodachi once more, he twitched his wrist so that the flat of the zanpauktou blade faced his adversary. Without even a word, the blade exploded in a flurry of golden reiatsu before dying down just as suddenly into the nothing from whence it came. Held in the right hand of Susumu Katsuro was the true form of his blade, the shikai of his zanpauktou, Nikkou. With the lack of light available due to the surrounding sphere of birds, the blade lacked its usual ethereal quality, resembling more a large purple crystal, but that did nothing to take away from its destructive power. Hearing his opponent address him once more, Katsuro looked over in his direction.

"Perhaps once I did Morty-kun, but that was a long time ago. I've had just over two thousand years to come to terms with my power. In that kind of time, fear gives way to understanding."

Beams of light blink in and out of existence all over the inside of the black dome, caused by the random spaces that the birds would leave was they moved, and then covered back up. The birds didn't seem to have any particular pattern, and so, flew in chaotic disorder. Perhaps a highly motivated and keen individual might be able to understand why, creatures that were being controlled by another, would be in such disarray. It was simple, they were reflecting the Tercera's current state of mind. Conflicted, there was something deeply disturbing him, very deeply. He had no wish to remain an Espada, or even among Aizen's Army for that fact. He wanted to leave and join the ranks of the Jinchuu, but he knew that was not possible. For one, the Shinigami would never allow an Arrancar to fight along side of them, they were natural enemies, there was no choice.

Another problem was Mortifero himself. Unlike his Espada superiors, Sarah and Garnet, deep in Mortifero's consciousness was the remnants of his original Hollow Instincts, which took the form of his insanity. He couldn't be fully trusted as long as this part of him existed. The only reason had not embraced this side, becoming like Raziel and Alita, was his intelligence. With that, he was forcibly suppressing his unlimited blood lust. The presence of his zanpakuto only made this all the more difficult. His sword seemed to call on his instincts, trying to turn over the control, which had happened a few times even without the presence of his magnificent blade.

Kasturo's words reverberated within the Arrancar's skull. So, he had once feared the power he wielded once too. Knowing this, for some reason, had a rather calming effect upon Mortifero. He understood now that with time, he may over come this fear of his strength and was possible for him to someday even embrace it. As soon as this occurred, the entire dome suddenly rippled as the ravens changed their flight. Suddenly, the dome was made of many different rings of the birds, each ring slowly rotating in the opposite direction of the ring below it. This dome let in more light, but still kept the outside world hidden from view.

At this time of the formation of the new dome, Mortifero was able to clearly see the man's sword. He had not relieved that he had released it into its true form. The weapon was truly marvelous and stunning. "Kasturo-kun, I'm honored that you would release your zanapkuto before the battle actually started," Mortifero was actually being completely sincere and actually couldn't wait to see how Kasturo-kun handled it.

Suddenly, the Arrancar was on the move, materializing a three feather blades in each hand. Without losing his hat, he cleared the space between the two of them in a matter of seconds, figuratively, in Kasturo's face. Using his momentum, Mortifero swung his right arm up, aiming to slash up the man's chest. This battle was going to get heated fast.

When a shinigami releases their zanpauktou, even to a level such as shikai which was virtually mandatory for any seated position in the old Gotei, their base amount of reiatsu increases in accordance with their release. So, it only stands to reason that the more powerful the shinigami and the more powerful the release, the more reiatsu that the shinigami would have to play around with. Honestly, for someone like Katsuro it was like being a kid in a candy shop.

Raising his reiatsu up to its current maximum as he waited for Mortifero to begin, the Commander couldn't help but broaden his smile. After all, this was the Tercera of Las Noches about to attack him, and his Heavy Assault and Defence Division was essentially a Kidou-friendly version of the old 11th. Which obviously meant that the person leading it would be somewhat of a battle crazed lout in love with sticking his sword into things. Well, to a certain extent it was most definately true. But Katsuro didn't enjoy killing, it took the fun out of the future and left a bad taste in his mouth. Though with the Tercera about to enter single combat against him, it was doubtful that he would be disappointed in any way shape or form upon completion of this duel.

Even with the light shining through the gaps between the surrounding dome of ravens, the shining white of his Taichou's haori seemed dim in comparison to how it normally looked. Although the glow of his now visible reiatsu restored some semblence of normality to that small aspect. The orange reiatsu appeared to be tangible as Katsuro held himself at his maximum. Hell, if anyone was looking for him at this particular point in time they couldn't help but find him unless they were completely blind to reiatsu. Even then, he was pretty loud so they would probably get to him eventually.

Nodding his head as Mortifero showed his respect to the release he had witnessed, Katsuro came to attention instantly as his opponent pushed off from the ground. Materialising the feathers was certainly unforseen, but Katsuro was a battle-hardened veteran when it came to dealing with shit you didn't see coming and managed to take it in his stride. Obviously, he had no idea what these lil' feathers would do to him, so the stubbled Commander saw no point in finding out the hard way. Their effect could be anything from tickling to instant death, what was the point in taking a chance?

Sliding slightly to his left as the Raven King slashed his hand through the air towards his chest, Katsuro brought his broad blade forward in an attempt to bulldoze the Arrancar's nose with the flat of the purple shiny death even as the attack whizzed past him by millimeters.

"Y'know Morty-kun, I've got a riddle for you. What do Ravens and writing desks have in common?"

Intelligent, quick, analytic, these were just a few things that Mortifero was able to pick up from simply observing Katsuro-kun's dodge. He was also able to analyze a small portion of his reiatsu fluctuation patterns. There had been a slight drop right before he slide out of the way of the Arrancar's feathered blade. The man was also one who did not waste time. As his blades hit only air, the flat of the Shinigami's was coming at his face. This man is quick about things, but as am I. He thought a split second before utilizing his impressive skills in manipulation of his Sonido to seemingly disappear from in front of Katsuro, leaving only raven feathers in his place. With the feathers that were left behind, fell the three blades that he had be holding in his right hand. As the others from the Sonido disintegrated as they touched the ground, the blades did not.

Mortifero appeared behind Katsuro at the end of his Sonido, right behind him, in the air. He was at the end of a spin, his foot flying for the Shinigami's head. During his Sonido, he had scattered more of his "Raven Darts" on the ground. This was a part of his master plan. Though this was only a friendly spar, the Tercera had no intention of losing. He was going to show that he was better then that cocky Primera from El Sol. Mortifero was smart, quicker, stronger... so why was Reyes a Primera when he was only a Tercera. This deep seated hatred for Reyes did not actually have to do with the Mortifero thinking he was better then that Arracnar, it was something else, but he was blind to the true fact.

Following up on his spinning kick, Mortifero continued to spin, throwing several of his Raven Darts at Katsuro before Sonidoing away from him. His feet slid across the ground as he stopped, about as far as he had been at the start of the small skirmish. He decided to take this chance to answer his new friends little question. "Poe wrote both." Mortifero grinned at Katsuro. Amazingly his hat was still atop his head, not having move even an inch from its place on his head. This was either skill or blind luck, either way it was a small surprise.
